It is with deep sorrow and much love that we announce that Audrey F. Fortenberry, 90, of Edmond, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully at her home on May 16, 2026 after a nine month battle with cancer. She was a cherished mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She was born on August 20, 1935 in Lamesa, Texas, to the late Grover and Iris (Francis) Ward. She grew up on a farm and ranch in Cochrane County, Texas. She graduated from Morton High School in 1935 where she played basketball and clarinet in the band. She retired as a civil servant serving military bases in Texas, Oklahoma, Virginia and Germany. She went back to school after raising her children, graduating from Cameron University in 1990 with a Bachelors of Business Administration in Business Management and an Associates Degree in Computer Programming.

In addition to her parents, Audrey was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, MSG Donald Morris Fortenberry. Her brother, Richard Clyde Ward, also preceded her in death.

She leaves behind a legacy of two loving children, Ronelle (Tim) Ankrom of New Albany, Ohio and Dr. Alan (Lisa) Fortenberry of Edmond, Oklahoma; four grandchildren, Scott (Andrea) Ankrom of Granville, Ohio, Cody (Elizabeth) Ankrom of Pataskala, Ohio, Jordan (Matthew) Hart of Edmond, Oklahoma and Dax Fortenberry of Edmond, Oklahoma; and eight great-grandchildren, Braxton, Kaden, Skyler, Alana, Amaiya, Colton, Lorenzo of Ohio and Ellie of Edmond, Oklahoma.

Audrey was a very strong, determined and independent woman. She was famous for her cooking, loved reading, jewelry and going to casinos. Her greatest love was her family. She will be greatly missed.

A memorial service celebrating Audrey’s life will be held on May 29, 2026 at Fort Sill National Cemetery near Elgin, OK.
