Barbara Gordon Dennis

Barbara Gordon Dennis was born on November 24, 1933, in Oklahoma City to Thomas Patrick Gordon and Pauline Margarete (Atwood) Gordon. She passed away peacefully at home on July 20, 2026.

She attended John Carroll Grade School, Taft Middle School, and Classen High School before earning a degree in Physical Education from Oklahoma State University, where she was a proud member of the Chi Omega Sorority.

After graduation, Barbara taught physical education at Northwest Classen High School, where she coached tennis, badminton, table tennis, and swimming. Summers found her as a lifeguard and swimming instructor at Twin Hills Golf & Country Club and Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club.

In 1956, she married the love of her life, Donald B. Dennis, beginning a life together that would span nearly seventy years. After the birth of their first child, Barbara devoted herself to raising her family—a role that suited her perfectly.

Barbara was the consummate host. No one ever walked through her front door without being offered something to eat or drink—usually several times. Barbara had a remarkable gift for making people feel welcome, cared for, and at home. It was simply who she was.

Barbara loved sports long after her teaching days ended. She enjoyed playing golf and tennis, rarely missed her children's and grandson's sporting events, and watched professional tennis on television. She also loved going to the movies and traveling. Whether exploring somewhere new with Don, vacationing with family, or taking trips with friends, she treasured the experiences and the time spent together.

Her volunteer work reflected her generous spirit. As a founding member and Guild member of St. Eugene Catholic Church, she faithfully served her parish and was active in the Young Men's Club. She also volunteered for many years at the American Quarter Horse World Show, the Aerospace America Air Show, and the Virginia Slims Tennis Tournament, where many looked forward to returning each year knowing Barbara would once again be there with food, conversation, and a smile.

Barbara had a wonderfully dry sense of humor. She loved to laugh and was always ready with a timely remark or pointed comment. Even Alzheimer's could not erase her wit. Though her memory faded, her humor remained remarkably intact.

Barbara was always a calming presence and a rock for her family. She was warm, supportive, and always wanted the best for the people she loved. She was many things to many people—a wife, daughter, sister, teacher, coach, friend, volunteer, and gracious host—but in her heart, she was Mom.

Barbara passed peacefully while sitting in her favorite chair, looking out the large window at the birds, rabbits, squirrels, and her neighbors walking their dogs. It truly was her happy place during her final years.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Don Dennis; her parents, Thomas and Pauline Gordon; her brother, Pat Gordon and his wife, Gayle; and her brother-in-law, Robert Kietzman.

She is survived by her sister, Dolores Kietzman of Porter, Texas; daughter Joy Brown and husband Rex of Edmond, Oklahoma; son Tom Dennis and wife Sally of Kissimmee, Florida; son Donald Dennis and wife Connie of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; grandson Jason Eddy of Jacksonville, North Carolina; great-granddaughter Katelyn Eddy of Edmond, Oklahoma; and many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Leslie Morton, Kim Edwards, and Frieda Abakah for the loving care they provided.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, at St. Eugene Catholic Church in Oklahoma City. A Celebration of Life will immediately follow at 11:30 a.m. Friends and family are warmly invited to attend both the Mass and the Celebration of Life. Lunch will be served following the celebration.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Eugene Catholic Church or the Oklahoma Alzheimer's Association.
