George Donald Gallaspy

George D. Gallaspy, 89, passed away on July 13, 2022, at Mercy Hospital. He was born in Oklahoma City on June 10, 1933, to George L. and Lottie C. Gallaspy. George "Don" was passionate about aviation as a youngster and worked after school to save $75 for flying lessons even before he graduated from Classen High School. He served 5 years in the U.S. Air Force before attending OU, where he earned a degree in geology. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. George met his wife of nearly 65 years, Helen JoAnn Roztocil, at OU, and they married at McFarlin Methodist Church in Norman on April 5, 1958.George worked for many years as a right-of-way agent while growing his own oil business. His love of flying and rebuilding airplanes took him to many events around the country, including major fly-ins at Oshkosh, WI, and Lakeland, FL. One special plane, a Piper Tri-Pacer painstakingly restored by Mr. Gallaspy, won several awards and trophies. He was often accompanied by his wife and their beloved miniature Schnauzer, or by one of his many lifelong airport buddies. When George wasn't tinkering with airplanes, he often helped friends and family repair or restore anything from old cars to player pianos. A Master Mason, George was a member of Hiram Lodge for 61 years. He was an active member of India Temple Shrine Center and the Jesters' Club. In addition to George's wife, JoAnn, he is survived by his daughter, Sherri (Michael) Coughlin; son, Joe Gallaspy; brother, William Gallaspy; and sister, Myralin Whitaker, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother Irvin Gallaspy. Memorial services will be at 10:30am Tuesday, July 19, at Smith and Kernke Funeral Home, 14624 N. May Ave., OKC. Following the service will be a celebration of life reception at the funeral home. Mr. Gallaspy wished to have his ashes spread at the airport where he spent many happy hours. The family wishes to thank his dear friends and the staff of Mercy Hospital for their love and care during George's failing health. Peace be with you.
