Hal Emery Silvernail

With great sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, & grandfather, Hal Emery Silvernail, 84, on July 28, 2026.

Born on July 27, 1942, in Oklahoma City, Hal lived a life defined by curiosity, devotion to his family, and a deep appreciation for the world around him. He graduated from Northwest Classen High School in 1960, served in the United States Army, earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Central Oklahoma, and later completed his master's degree at the University of Oklahoma.

Hal's passion for science inspired him to begin his career as a science teacher at Putnam City North High School, where he encouraged countless students to ask questions and think critically. He later transitioned to the private sector, enjoying a successful 20-year career with Western Electric, Southwestern Bell, AT&T, and Lucent before retiring in 1999.

Hal was a lifelong learner and teacher whose curiosity never faded. He found joy in building, fixing, and creating. He delighted in long conversations about the mysteries of the universe, always inspiring others to wonder along with him. Hal believed deeply in the value of hard work, perseverance, and honoring your commitments.

Above all, Hal was a devoted single father, instilling his love of nature in his children. Some of their most treasured memories were made during annual road trips across the country in his beloved Volkswagen camper, exploring America's national parks. For the past 31 years, Hal found his greatest happiness alongside his wife, Joyce, tending their yard, traveling, and sharing a life filled with love, laughter, and grandchildren.

Hal was preceded in death by his parents, Emery Edward Silvernail and Ruth Enid Suttee, as well as his wives, Charlene Elaine Blumhof and Patti Jane Murphy. He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Elaine Silvernail, along with his children, Jason Silvernail (Nicki), Chris Silvernail (Brigitte) and Micah Stirling; sister, Mary Elaine Frissell (Don); grandchildren, Erin, Elizabeth, Ethan, Benji, Evelyn, Alex, Ingrid, Sarah, Max, Edith, & Birdie; and many others who loved and cherished him.

A memorial service celebrating Hal’s life will be held on August 5, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Smith & Kernke Funeral Home, 14624 N. May Avenue, Oklahoma City. We invite all who knew and loved Hal to join us in honoring his memory.

In lieu of flowers, we encourage you to honor Hal’s love of nature by making a contribution to the National Park Foundation.
