James “Jim” Carter Richard, 91, of Yukon, Oklahoma, passed away on January 11, 2026. Born in 1934 to John and Arlene (Carter) Richard of Kansas, he graduated from Lawrence Memorial High in 1952 and went on to receive a Bachelor’s in Geology from the University of Kansas in 1956. He was an accomplished gymnast during his years in junior high and high school, and was a member of various professional organizations such as the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Oklahoma Geological Society, and American Petroleum Institute.
Jim is remembered most for the 68 years of loving devotion to his wife, Barbara, which saw a lifetime of dreams become memories. The couple enjoyed traveling together over the years, and started a family that has grown to over 100 descendants and counting. He married his bride in 1957, the couple became residents of Oklahoma in 1963, and in 1972 settled in Yukon, which became their permanent home. They raised their daughters while building a home, founding Richard Exploration, and dedicating themselves to preserving the Traditional Latin Mass in Oklahoma.
As a father, Jim was the very best. He loved his family in a way that was simple and quiet, but spoke volumes. His example of tender dedication, quiet sacrifice, and patient kindness will echo through generations.
Jim was cherished by each of his grandchildren, and spent time entertaining them with ooo-dogies, picky-sticky in the orchards, and teaching them classes in computer programs, dance, and science. He imparted knowledge of rocks, trees, engine repair, lawn care, and Papaw-specific tips on domestic bliss. He is also remembered for his vast collection of “autographed” books dedicated by each author to his “good friend, Jim”, and wonderful Independence Day parties featuring Papaw’s Chicken. A life-long learner and voracious reader. He was given the distinction of N (Navigator) by Governor Walters along with his grandsons N (Junior Navigators), Marcus and James.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Barbara Richard, daughters Cynthia Robinson, Theresa (Mark) Huston, and Nancy Johnston, and grandchildren Marcus (Crystal) Robinson, Mandy Green, Ashley (Chad) Coulter, Justin Johnston, Christopher “Ryan” Johnston, Heather Robinson, Melissa Walker, Jessica (Daniel) Hilgenberg, Tracy (Stephen) Holaday, April (Robert) Vrtis, Kelly (Jordan) Willoughby, Marcy (Dustin) Fulton, Mary (John) Niles, Anthony (Shaynie) Huston, Elizabeth (Bradley) Nance, Bryan (Diane) Robinson, John “Mason” Huston, John (Natalie) Robinson, Richard “Hunter” (Riley) Robinson, Rebecca (Joseph) Buscemi, Michelle (Peter) Buscemi, and Therese Robinson, and 80 great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jim is preceded in death by parents John and Arlene Richard, siblings John (Nancy) and Paul (Marlene) Richard, son-in-law Bryan Robinson, grandson James Robinson, and great-granddaughter Jaydlyn Hilgenberg.
The family would like to honor the wonderful caregivers who have been a part of our lives over the years. Melissa, who felt honored to take care of her grandfather, was his main caregiver night and day. Madi, great-granddaughter, who also felt honored to help with him. Jeff, who was there from the beginning, almost five years. Maria and Laura, sisters who showed their love for him. Kyle, an extended part of the family who showed great care. Lisa, who was always a gentle and caring help. Our sincere gratitude extends to each of you.
“Now, we must look for the future in heaven, and the next step on a lifetime of love.” -Barbara Richard
