James Peter Markey

James Peter Markey, affectionately known as Jim to family and friends, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 22, 2026, at the age of 88.

Born on January 13, 1938, in Denver, Colorado, Jim was raised in Wichita Falls, Texas. He was the son of James Patrick Markey and Margaret Patricia (Moore) Markey. Preceded in death by his parents (James in 1989 and Margaret in 1991), his sisters Joan Markey (2025) and Jane Pauline (Markey) Gibson (2011).

Jim studied at St. Gregory’s University and the University of Oklahoma, graduating from OU in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. Shortly after graduation, he honorably served his country in the United States Army from May 1962 to April 1965, receiving an Honorable Discharge

In the years that followed, Jim moved his young family to Orange, Texas, where he began a long and successful career with Crown Zellerbach. He remained with the company and its successor entities until his retirement.

A devoted husband to his wife, Mary Ann (Brown) Markey, for more than 63 years, Jim was a loving father to his three children, a doting grandfather to seven, and a great-grandfather of two.

Throughout his life, Jim placed his Catholic faith and family above all else. Known for his selfless nature, strong work ethic, and quiet generosity, he was always the first to help others and ensured their needs came before his own. He found his greatest joy in the outdoors—fishing, hunting, and boating. This passion led him to own and operate the Sportsman Hook Up, a small boating resale business that allowed him to share his love for the water. He held a special place in his heart for Orange, Texas, where so many cherished family memories were made.

Jim’s legacy is one of love, service, dedication, and unwavering commitment to family. The simple pleasures he cherished—being on the water, sharing stories, and spending time with loved ones—will live on in the countless memories he created.

He is survived by his wife Mary Ann of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; his three children, James Peter Markey, Jr. (Pete) of College Station, Texas, Mary Susan (Markey) Whittington of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Michael Patrick Markey of Washington, D.C.; and his brother, Edward G. Markey of North Richland Hills, Texas.
