John Thomas McCharen III

John Thomas McCharen III, affectionately known as “Johnny,” passed away on July 18, 2025, at the age of 79. A lifelong resident of Oklahoma City, Johnny was a man of deep character, sharp intellect, and boundless generosity. His legacy is one of devotion—to family, community, country, and a strong belief in the value of hard work.

Johnny was born on January 8, 1946, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He graduated from Harding High School in 1964 and went on to attend the University of Oklahoma. He remained a proud and passionate supporter of both institutions throughout his life—Sooner born and Sooner bred.

Johnny served honorably in the Army National Guard as part of the 45th Infantry Division, a role that reflected his patriotism and lifelong support of veterans.

In his professional life, Johnny led Osborne Electric Company, a business founded by his father and Marvin Osborne, guided it into a thriving enterprise through innovation and hard work. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to found several other businesses as well, always with a focus on building something lasting for future generations.

Above all, Johnny was a devoted husband, loving father, and proud grandfather. His family was the heart of his world. He was known for his quick wit, kind heart, and an ever-ready willingness to lend a hand to those in need.

Johnny was preceded in death by his beloved parents, John and June McCharen of Oklahoma City; his cherished daughter, Susie Vesper of Oklahoma City; and his beloved grandson, Donald Edward McCleery III, “Trey,” of Denver, Colorado.

He is survived by his loving wife, Cindy McCharen; his sister, Janie Shea; his children, John Thomas McCharen IV (Tishia McCharen), Mindy McCharen McCleery (Donny McCleery), and Rob Cherry (Vicki Cherry); and his treasured grandchildren, Jack Vesper, Kate Vesper, Blake Cherry, Ryan Cherry, Adam Cherry, Drew McCleery, and Taiylor Johnson.

A celebration of Johnny’s life will be held on Monday, July 28, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at St. Luke’s Methodist Church in Oklahoma City.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation (www.t2t.org) and The Special Forces Association Chapter 32-50 of Oklahoma (www.specialforcesassociation.org/donate), organizations close to Johnny’s heart.

Johnny McCharen lived a life of purpose, service, and love. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
