Kenneth "Tex" "Kenny" Lynn Barnett

Kenneth Lynn Barnett, lovingly known as “Tex” and “Kenny,” was called home by our Lord on May 19, 2025, after a courageous three-year battle with lung cancer. His determination and strong will exceeded all expectations, astonishing even his doctors.

Kenny was born in Sayre, Oklahoma, to William and Lola Marie Barnett. He was the second of four children. Due to his father’s work in the oilfield, the family moved frequently, and Kenny attended two to four schools a year. They eventually settled in Elk City, Oklahoma, during his sophomore year so he could play football and graduate from Elk City High School. He later proudly served in the Air National Guard for 12 years.

Kenny began working in the oilfield at the young age of 15, taking shifts after school, at night, and on weekends. Supporting his family was a top priority, and he never hesitated to do whatever it took. He was deeply proud of his three sons and six grandchildren. When not working, he made it a point to attend as many of their sporting events as possible—including football, track, soccer, trap/skeet shooting, and rodeo.

The oilfield was not just a career—it was a passion. Kenny’s tireless work ethic and willingness to take on the toughest jobs, even in remote jungles and dangerous conditions, earned the respect of many. He began working for Helmerich & Payne Drilling Company in 1965 and remained with them for 27 years, with assignments across Oklahoma, Texas, and Mississippi. In his 20s, he moved his family to Venezuela and went on to work in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Guatemala.

Kenny had extensive experience in all facets of the oil business—drilling, completions, and production. He later founded and ran a successful consulting firm. He was known for his intelligence, grit, and mentorship, and he built lasting friendships throughout his career.

Kenny met Lorraine in 2009, and the two quickly fell in love. They were blessed to share over 16 wonderful years together. For several years, they went back and forth between Elk City and Oklahoma City before marrying in 2017. In 2020, they completed their forever home together—something they both took great pride in.

They especially loved traveling, attending country music concerts, spending time at the beach, and visiting Kenny’s favorite place in the mountains of San Miguel, Mexico. As a good old country boy, adjusting to life in Oklahoma City took some time—but once he got used to the traffic, he settled in and proudly called OKC his home.

Beyond work, Kenny had a deep and generous heart. He was a strong supporter of nonprofits that served children in need, and he quietly contributed to causes he believed would make a lasting difference. He also helped establish and support college funds for his grandchildren, always emphasizing the importance of education and giving them a strong start toward their future.

Kenny was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lola Marie, and his beloved son Brad. He is survived by his wife Lorraine Barnett; sons Barry (Joni), Bart (Shannon), and B.J. (Susan); stepchildren, Catherine Sanders (Curt), and Joey Barta (Jessica); grandchildren Brooklynn Biddick (Ryan), Brenna Dunlap (Ethan), Baylar, Blakely, Brett, and Breegan Barnett, Lily Louise Sanders, and Edward Sanders; and great-grandchildren Rebecca Biddick and Evelyn Dunlap. He is also survived by his siblings Lois Marie Scrivner, Cheryl Anne Ivey, and Gary Barnett; and his dear friend L.C. Price.

The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to his incredible team of doctors who provided compassionate care throughout his journey: Dr. David Wilson, Dr. Jess Armor, Dr. Astrid Morrison, and Dr. Eric Friedman.

Final words: Work hard. Love your family. Tell a good story. And if the job’s dirty-well, someone’s gotta do it.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation http://t2t.org/donate/ or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in memory of Kenny Barnett, honoring his lifelong commitment to helping others.
