Kim Walter Cunningham

Kim Walter Cunningham, 74, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2026 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was born on July 16, 1952, in Columbia, Missouri to Dr. Clyde and Marialice Cunningham and grew up surrounded by family, friends, and treasured memories on the lake.

Kim approached life with an unparalleled work ethic and devotion to those around him. He attended Oklahoma State University, where in 1975 he graduated with a bachelor's in architectural studies and then pursued his master’s degree in architecture in 1977. He carried that determination and creative vision into every pursuit, both professional and personal. He designed not only prominent structures in Oklahoma, but also across the country and curated relationships built on love and loyalty.

He was a proud member and true leader of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity for more than fifty years. Kim’s deep connection to his chapter and its brotherhood was a cornerstone of his life. He leaves behind cherished friendships and his presence in the lives of so many who loved him. He offered guidance, mentorship, and acts of service that have impacted generations of young men and forever shaping the legacy of the fraternity he loved so dearly.

Kim’s unwavering devotion to his family was apparent to anyone who knew him. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sandy, with whom he shared 41 years of love and partnership. Together, they had two sons, Tyler and Travis, who were the pride of Kim’s life. He was a loyal and ever-present figure at their sides. He was their everything; teacher and coach of all sports, scorekeeper and videographer at every single practice and game, an always present cheerleader, and their very own Mr. Fix It. The family circle grew with the addition of daughters-in-law Kristen and Andi, and Kim’s joy multiplied with his new title of Pop Pop to his grandchildren: Kellen and Keeley, and Dean and Sophie. Each of them carries forward the values and the love he poured into their lives.

Kim’s love extended beyond his family; he never met a dog that did not deserve a good long belly rub and his lap to sit on. He was the man who could fix anything, an avid collector of all tools, and everyone's handyman. Kim was defined by his genuine loyalty and generosity, a humble work ethic, and his ability to banter with quiet wit.

He is remembered with affection by his brother, Hal and wife Clarene Cunningham; sisters-in-law Sherry Garrison, Sheila Hunnicutt, Vicki Napier, and Debbie Ashworth and their families. Each played an important role in Kim’s extended circle, sharing in decades of family milestones and treasured gatherings.

Kim was preceded in death by his father and mother, Clyde and Marialice Cunningham and is also reunited with his precious granddaughter, Ellie Cunningham; brother-in-law, Chris Napier; and his in-laws, David and Helen Self.

A public memorial service will be held on Friday, August 14th, 2026 at 1:00pm at Crossings Community Church Chapel.
