Leona Emilie Carlin Sherman, age 94, died peacefully in Oklahoma City on January 6, 2010, following a brief illness. Leona was born February 4, 1915, in Hoyt, KS, to Ed and Lydia Carlin. She attended Hoyt schools and graduated from Hoyt High School in 1932. She then attended Strickler's Business School in Topeka, KS, and eventually went to work for Kansas Unemployment Compensation. She met Nathan S. Sherman, III, a native of Oklahoma City, and after their marriage in 1942 moved to St. Louis where they lived until Nathan was deployed during WWII. In 1945, Leona and Nathan moved to Oklahoma City where they lived the remainder of their lives. Leona worked in various offices of Oklahoma County government including the County Assessor, County Clerk, District Attorney and County Commissioners Office until her retirement in 1977. She was active with the youth department at May Avenue United Methodist Church, loved working in her yard, trout fishing in New Mexico and Missouri, bridge and mahjong groups. Her mahjong group loved her with all their hearts. She began bowling in her late 60's and enjoyed that outlet into her 90's. Leona was preceded in death by her husband Nathan Sherman, III, and her brother Roy Carlin of Topeka, KS. She is survived by a son Steve Sherman and his wife Leslie of Stockton, CA, a daughter Judy Bush and her husband Gary of Edmond and her sister Bernice Carlin of Topeka, KS. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Debbie Keele of Norman, Cathy Filian of Glendale, CA, Kyle Sherman of San Diego, CA, Kristin Vines of San Francisco, CA, Mike Bush of Norman, and Erin Berich of Pasadena, CA. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, and nieces and nephews of three generations
