Marcus Carl Schlegel

Marcus Carl Schlegel was born to Carl and Darlene Schlegel on June 9, 1949 in Great Bend, KS and departed this life on August 27, 2025 in Edmond, OK. Mark spent his early years in Otis, KS. In 1953, his younger brother, Kurt, joined the family. They lived on the Schlegel family farm until Carl took a job at the National Helium Plant in Otis and moved to a home in the company camp. In 1959, the family moved to the company camp near Keys, Ok when the new National Helium Plant was built east of town. Mark enjoyed science and math classes, football, hunting and fishing, and earning money plowing fields in the summer.

After graduation, Mark attended Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, graduating in 1971 with a BS degree in Electrical Engineering. Mark started and ended his career with Public Service of Oklahoma (AEP) in Tulsa. In the middle of his working days, he worked at Guernsey Engineering in OKC and Williams Brother Engineering in Tulsa. Mark retired from AEP in 2015 and worked at home as a consultant until 2017. Mark’s projects took him to various places like the Rocky Mountains, the North Slope of Alaska, Puerto Rico, and Russia shortly after the fall of the Soviet Union. He always loved his work.

In 1969, Mark married Donna Wills and they had one son, Kevin Lynn Schlegel. The marriage was dissolved, but they both remained present in Kevin’s life. Mark and Kevin lived in Oklahoma City for a few years before moving back to Tulsa where Kevin graduated from Jenks High School in 1995.

After about 20 years of being a single dad, Mark married Judy Evans Liner in OKC at Mayflower Congregational Church on November 2, 2002. They resided in Tulsa for twelve years, then retired to Edmond, OK. Mark and Judy loved traveling, landscaping their yards, feeding the birds, watching OSU sports, and Thunder basketball. They also enjoyed card or domino game nights with friends. They attended many musical events during their marriage and sometimes traveled far to see some of their favorite musicians. When grandchildren came along, a whole new joy was added to their lives. Mark was very dedicated to helping his parents, especially in the later years.

Mark had many avid hobbies, including flying his Piper Cherokee airplane, fishing and waterskiing at Fort Gibson Lake, taking motorcycle trips with friends through Colorado, Arkansas, Missouri, and Texas, polishing his 1967 Corvette Stingray and even occasionally driving it! He joined friends on several snow skiing trips in Colorado and New Mexico and he took his parents on a European tour tracing his dad’s movements during World War II for their 50th wedding anniversary.

In April 2024, Mark was diagnosed with bile duct cancer, a rare and deadly disease. He fought it courageously for over 16 months before it finally ended his life. Even during his treatments, Mark and Judy managed to take vacations to New York City, Orange Beach, AL, and Leadville, CO. Mark is survived by his wife, Judy, of the home in Edmond, son, Kevin, and wife Lindsay, grandchildren Anton and Raelynn of Muleshoe, Texas, his brother, Kurt of Aurora, CO, many cousins, and many friends. Mark was a reserved, kind-hearted man who will be dearly missed by his loved ones.
