Roger Franklin Freeman died August 16, 2024, in Oklahoma City after a sudden illness. Roger was born August 3, 1953, in San Antonio, Texas, as the middle son of the three sons of Judge Richard W. Freeman, Sr. and Janelle Ramsey Freeman. Roger grew up in Oklahoma City and attended Longfellow Elementary, Millwood Jr. High, and John Marshall High School, graduating in 1971. After high school, Roger attended Southeastern State University and Central State University.
Roger enlisted in the US Army in 1972 and proudly served mainly stationed in Hawaii, a posting which he often boasted was free from Viet Cong attacks under his watch. Following his discharge, he operated the Oklahoma Outpost Country Store in Pauls Valley for several years. Later, he partnered with his brother, John Freeman, to establish Piggy’s Barbecue in Brick Town, a venture they maintained for many years until its sale. Roger then managed the Freeman Family farm in Cashion, Oklahoma, for over two decades before retiring last year.
Roger was predeceased by his parents and brother John. Roger is survived by his brother Richard W. Freeman, Jr. (and wife Vickie); nieces Rachel Ticer (and husband Bryan Ticer) and Katie Freeman Price (and husband Lt Col. Chuck Price, USAF); nephews Ryan Freeman and Rick Freeman (and wife Ashlee); and many great nephews and nieces.
A come and go viewing and visitation for Roger will take place from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm on Wednesday, August 21st at Smith & Kernke-May Ave, 14624 N. May Ave., Oklahoma City. Roger will be buried at Rose Hill Burial Park on Thursday, August 22nd at 10:00 am in Oklahoma City following a private family funeral service. A memorial luncheon in Roger’s honor will be held in the future at the Cattlemen’s Steakhouse in Oklahoma City for his friends and family as he requested.
Roger was a good son, great brother and the “fun” uncle. Known for his warm and welcoming nature, he was a true friend who never met a stranger. He will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Michael Scherlag, Dr. Jay Reynolds, and the exceptional nursing staff at the Oklahoma Heart Hospital North for the compassionate care provided to Roger during his final illness. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Roger’s memory to the Oklahoma Heart Hospital Research Foundation, 4200 W. Memorial Rd, Suite 510, Oklahoma City, OK 73120.
