Sally F. Burpee

Sally Fisher Burpee is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Roy Fisher, born February 22, 1939, in Saginaw, Michigan.  Her family moved to Fort Worth, Texas when she was 4 years old.   She attended Arlington Heights High School and entered Stephens College, Columbia, Missouri, graduating two years later.   She attended the University of Texas transferring to Texas Wesleyan College graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in in 1964.  Sally moved to San Antonio where she began her teaching career.  In 1966, she met and married United States Air Force Captain Richard Burpee.  She followed her husband around the United States making a home 26 different times in their 37-year career.  Never complained and was quick to establish a home like atmosphere after every move.   She had two sons and served as the mother and father when official military duties required her husband to be absent far too many times.  This was a challenge, especially caring for a special needs son.  The most memorable times were developing close community relationships in places like Washington, DC, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Omaha, Nebraska, Riverside, California, and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  During all these assignments, she graciously supported and entertained at all the military and civilian functions.  When her husband commanded major Air Forces, Sally filled the role of first lady and spent many hours looking out for the welfare of the military families at each of his Air Force bases.  Military duties required her to travel to all parts of the world supporting Air Force families.  She was a great ambassador and made major contributions throughout all her travels.   After retiring from the Air Force and settling in Oklahoma City, Sally became a professional painter.  Her paintings were sought after not only by her friends and given to charities but sold on the market as well. Sally is a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church of Oklahoma City.  She is survived by her husband Lieutenant General Richard Burpee, 2 sons Richard Jr. and Brent Burpee, grandson Wesley Burpee, granddaughter Ashley Burpee.  2 sisters, Susan McCaleb (Dr. William McCaleb), Marth Schoellkopf (Alan Schoellkopf), and brother Tim Fisher.
