Shirley Hunyadi

Shirley Hunyadi, a trailblazer in the real estate industry and a beloved member of the community, passed away on January 22, 2024, in Oklahoma City. She was born on December 19, 1939, in Hobart, Oklahoma. Shirley left an indelible mark on the world with her accomplishments, enduring friendships, and unwavering commitment to her family.

She graduated from Chickasha High School in 1957 before going on to attend Southwestern College in Chickasha from 1958 to 1960. These formative years laid the foundation for a lifetime of learning and growth.

Shirley's professional journey began in the late 60’s in Torrance CA, where she worked as an associate for the job placement agency Snelling & Snelling and later managed a boutique dress shop.  Upon returning to Oklahoma City she started a successful real estate career with Red Carpet Realty.  In 1979, she opened the very first RE/MAX REALTORS office in Oklahoma. Her dedication and unparalleled expertise quickly propelled her to success. Throughout her career, Shirley received numerous broker honors from RE/MAX, showcasing her talent and passion for helping others find their dream homes. 

Beyond her thriving career, Shirley had a deep love for travel. Together with her husband Gene Hunyadi, she owned a cherished home in Mazatlán, Mexico, for many years. They found solace in the Pacific shores of Mexico and created countless precious memories together.

Above all else, family meant everything to Shirley. She is survived by her loving husband Gene Hunyadi; son Warren DeKinder and wife Angie, Stepson Butch Hunyadi, and wife Monica; grandchildren Cole and Alexandra DeKinder, step grandchildren Brittany Miller, and Kelsey Hunyadi-Coll; great-grandchildren Harrison, Emerson, and Charlotte; nephew Brandon Smith and wife Damaris and family.  She is also survived by her long-time employee and friend Gilbert.  Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Jess and Jean Smith, brother Jesse F. Smith, Jr. and nephew Frank Smith.  

A visitation is scheduled for Saturday, January 27th from Noon until 6 PM at Smith and Kernke N. May Ave. Funeral Home.  The funeral service to honor Shirley's life will take place at 2:00 PM on Sunday, January 28, 2024, at Smith and Kernke N. May Ave Funeral Home in Oklahoma City.
