Dr. Stephen Tkach, a pioneering orthopedic surgeon and beloved family man, passed away on May 25, 2026, at the age of 94. Born on February 19, 1932, in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, Dr. Tkach's life was marked by remarkable achievements, deep devotion to his loved ones, and a warm, gregarious nature that endeared him to all who knew him.
Dr. Tkach's academic journey began on the football fields of Alabama University, where he earned a scholarship and played for two years before transferring to the University of Kansas. There, he continued his athletic endeavors on scholarship and graduated with a degree in Chemistry in 1954. He pursued his passion for medicine at the University of Oklahoma, earning his Medical degree in 1960. Following a yearlong internship at Fort Benning, Georgia, he completed a residency in Orthopedic Surgery in Oklahoma City.
Stephen's life was transformed when he met DeNean Ankerholz at Kansas, and they married May 8th, 1954. After college, Stephen served his country in the Army, stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska, at what would become Ladd Air Force Base, where DeNean joined him 6 months later. His linguistic skills in Russian and Ukrainian led to an important role interpreting Russian radio signals from across the Bering Strait. His leadership extended to the football field as well, where he was entrusted with the dual responsibilities of coach and quarterback of the Regimental Combat Football team, a testament to his athletic prowess and inspiring character. He rose to the rank of Captain ahead of his time in service, demonstrating commitment and excellence in his military career.
In 1965, Dr. Tkach joined the McBride Clinic, where he played a vital role in pioneering total joint replacements of the hip and knee in Oklahoma. His innovation and expertise significantly advanced orthopedic care in the region, impacting countless patients whose lives were improved by his skillful hands and compassionate approach. He was a member of the American Society of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Medical Association, American College of Surgeons, the Oklahoma City Orthopedic Society, and the Downtown Oklahoma City Rotary Club and served as a deacon and an elder at Westminster Presbyterian Church. In more recent years, he and DeNean attended Crossings Community Church. Dr. Tkach also devoted his time as team physician for the football and wrestling teams at Heritage Hall High School.
Known for his warmth and genuine friendliness, Dr. Tkach was deeply devoted both to his patients and his family. He shared 67 cherished years of marriage with his beloved wife, DeNean, whose memory he honored profoundly. Together, they treasured their adventures traveling the world alongside many dear friends, creating lifelong memories filled with joy and camaraderie.
