Thomas “Tommy” Sterling Hansen

It is with heavy hearts and deep gratitude that we remember Thomas "Tommy" Sterling Hansen, who passed away on June 23th at the age of 62. Tommy leaves behind an incredible legacy of memories, laughter, and love that will remain with all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Born on the Fourth of July 1963, Tommy was always a firecracker—entering the world with a fighting spirit that never faded. He was truly special to everyone he met, not simply because he was considered “special needs,” but because of his radiant heart, unwavering faith in the Lord, and fierce devotion to family and friends. Despite being born with Cerebral Palsy and unable to use his arms and legs or communicate verbally, Tommy’s mind was sharp and his spirit even sharper.

From the very beginning, Tommy’s parents dedicated themselves wholeheartedly to advocating for him—working tirelessly for improved handicapped access in schools and public transportation, seeking out the best doctors, and ensuring he had the services necessary to thrive, even in an environment where the needs of the special needs community can often go unseen.

His mother Mary’s profound devotion shaped Tommy’s life. Mary poured her heart into caring for Tommy every single day. Her commitment went far beyond simply providing for his needs; she made sure he always felt loved and protected. When she was no longer able to care for him personally, she found a compassionate caregiver, and continued to support Tommy daily—connecting with him through FaceTime and text messages, showing her unwavering presence and affection up until the day Tommy passed. Mary’s dedication was truly remarkable, and her love made all the difference in Tommy’s life, as well as the lives of his siblings.

In his early years, communication came through language boards and spelling out the alphabet, evolving with technology into synthesized voices and a “Handi-voice,” which he operated with a specially developed head array with a pointer in front. Those close to him affectionately nicknamed him the Unicorn—and in so many ways, Tommy was truly one of a kind.

Tommy’s courage, determination, and resilience were legendary. He refused to let obstacles define him, living life on his own terms with unmistakable style. After graduating from Putnam City North High School, Tommy attended community college and began a dedicated career in the Data Entry Division of the Department of Human Services. He took immense pride in his work, building independence through sheer perseverance.

Music was a true comfort for Tommy, with The Beach Boys often serenading his days. He loved classic television reruns, finding joy in familiar characters and stories that never failed to make him smile. Tommy also had a servant’s heart and a powerful faith in God that began at a young age. In his early years, he attended several church services around Oklahoma City in his wheelchair, and for the last 20 years, he became a faithful online member of The Village Church congregation, never wavering in his belief.

The computer was Tommy’s social window to the world. He was an enthusiastic presence on Facebook, spending time working on his book and sending messages to his family. Tommy never hesitated to share exactly what was on his mind—his posts were honest, passionate, and authentic, often keeping his loved ones in anticipation of his next comment. His willingness to speak openly was just one of the many qualities that made him uniquely Tommy.

Above all, Tommy cherished his family. He was a devoted son, caring brother, and proud uncle, sharing lessons in perseverance and determination every day. Tommy never physically walked this earth, but metaphorically, he stood taller than anyone in the room, “walking the talk” with unmatched strength.

Tommy’s life is a testament to resilience, independence, and courage. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever celebrated by everyone who knew him. He will always remain our favorite firecracker, inspiring us with his remarkable spirit.

May his memory bring comfort and continue to inspire all who remember his extraordinary journey.

Tommy is loving survived by his devoted Mother -Mary Hansen, Sister- Cherry Doolittle, Brother- Mark Hansen & wife Patti, Sister- Serena Buck & husband Rick, Nephew- Tyler Doolittle & wife Lauren, Niece-Cassi Doolittle & partner Adrian Pappan, Niece- Danielle Terrell & husband Kevin, Niece- Lauren Branch, Nephew-Jerrod Hansen & wife Lizzie and Niece -Lindsay Goodpasture & husband Bryan, numerous great nieces and nephews and his long-time caregiver and best friend John Loveless.
