Virginia Stevenson

Virginia Louise Cosgrove Stevenson, known as "Ginny" and later "Gigi" to her treasured grandchildren, unexpectedly passed away of respiratory failure at the young age of 68 on August 19, 2026.

Born in San Diego, California, on June 4th, 1958, Ginny was the fourth of five children. A California girl through and through, summers meant being in Borrego Springs with her brothers and sisters, and the beaches of San Diego meant baby oil, foil reflectors, and chasing every last ray of California sun. Early on, she worked the Revlon counter at May Company, where her lifelong love of retail therapy began.

Ginny married the love of her life, Bob Stevenson, 42 years ago, and together they began a journey that carried them from California through Washington, Texas, Arkansas, Arizona, and finally Oklahoma City. No matter where they landed, Ginny always made a house a home, instilling in her family that home wasn't a place, it was simply being together.

Together they raised three beautiful daughters: Becky, Katie, and Carrie. Ginny adored her girls. She was the ultimate mom, making chocolate-chip pancakes every morning and keeping the pantry stocked with Costco-sized snacks and soda. Their home was THE neighborhood hangout and a house that always seemed to have one more kid in it than anyone remembered inviting. She was a Girl Scout leader, a Sunday school teacher, plus a second mother to everyone who walked through the door. She loved being surrounded by kids, throwing tea parties, putting on puppet shows, and jump-scaring the girls just to hear their squeals. She was F-U-N, always the first to laugh and the last to let a moment be boring.

One of her greatest hopes was that her daughters would find the kind of love in their own lives that she had found with Bob: steady, unconditional, forgiving, funny, and strong enough to carry you through the miles. So she gladly welcomed Clay, Asa, and Eric into the family as her own. Watching each daughter build a loving marriage brought her enormous joy. She took the boys’ side 98% of the time, and what she thought the other 2% … she kept to herself. She loved cooking with her boys, bantering, and playing a few rounds of Gin, somehow always coming out the winner.

Then came Josie, Trip, Jon-Peter, and Ginny, who became her new identity, “Gigi”. This may have been the role she had been rehearsing for her entire life. She loved spending every moment with them. She never missed a sporting event, a school Grandparents' Day, or a performance. She always showed up and always cheered the loudest. She also passed her shopaholic tendencies to the next generation; a trip to "Gigi's Target" became an adventure all its own.

The grandchildren loved being in Papa and Gigi's home, crafting, building forts, fishing, and baking her infamous chocolate chip cookies together. She delighted in spoiling them with surprise Amazon packages, over-the-top holiday decorations, and sleepovers full of mischief, cuddles, and pure magic.

Being mom and Gigi were her proudest roles, but Ginny’s kindness, love, and warmth didn't stop there. Hilarious, quick-witted, and a true friend to all, Ginny brought her unique spirit to AA meetings, where she found camaraderie, inspiration, and deep purpose. That treasured community reciprocated equally, surrounding her with abundant love and support.

Ginny is survived by her husband, Bob Stevenson; her daughters, Becky Taylor (Clay), Katie Yoakam (Asa), and Carrie Coy (Eric); her grandchildren, Josie, Trip, and Jon-Peter Taylor; her siblings, Peter Cosgrove (Coni), Carrie Benham (Gregg), and Arnie Cosgrove (Steven); and eight nieces and nephews who adored her as their incredible aunt.

She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Cosgrove Sr.; her mother, Elizabeth Cosgrove; her mother-in-law, Juantia Stevenson; her father-in-law, Fred Mueller; her aunt, Virginia Clark; and her brother, Thomas Cosgrove Jr., and his wife, Pegi Cosgrove.

There is no good way to describe the silence left behind by someone who brought this much noise, laughter, warmth, and life into a family. But maybe silence isn't quite the right way to think about it. Because there are still chocolate-chip pancakes to make. There are still kids to spoil. There are still cards to deal, decorations to hang, beaches to walk, fish to catch, cookies to bake, and people wandering through the door who need to know they're welcome. And every time the family gathers, every time somebody laughs too loudly, buys something they didn't need, takes the boys' side, or turns an ordinary day into something worth remembering, Ginny will be there in the way people we love sometimes remain with us: not at the end of the road, but somewhere along it.
