William Gregory Cunningham

William Gregory Cunningham, longtime attorney, avid outdoorsman, and a loyal supporter of the University of Oklahoma football team, died Oct. 27, 2026, in Edmond, Okla. He was 79.

Born Dec. 20, 1946, he and his wife and daughters were residents of Edmond for decades. Greg attended U.S. Grant High School in Oklahoma City before transferring to Yukon High School. He graduated in 1965. He had also been a star football player for the YHS Millers.

He graduated from the OU School of Law with a Juris Doctorate and was part of the ROTC program at the university with a commission of U.S. Army 2nd Lieutenant. He was a Distinguished Service Military Student and a member of Scabbard and Blade.

Greg was a season ticket holder to the OU football games for 53 years. His late father, Bill Cunningham, once said he believed his oldest son could have been a great addition to the Sooner football team had he not suffered a season-ending injury while playing for the Yukon Millers.

An attorney for 50 years, he also served as a municipal judge in Oklahoma County, where he would regularly make his then college age daughters attend his hearings to teach them “life lessons.” He was also a member of the Oklahoma Municipal Judge's Association. He had been vice president of Order-Matic Corporation, a Del City company in business for more than 50 years that served many independent and national fast food chains with hospitality technology and menu solutions.

He was a Paul Harris Fellow through Edmond Rotary and most recently became a Board Member for the Center for Family Love in Okarche, OK. Greg enjoyed being a member of the Mayfair Dance Club in Oklahoma City. He was a voracious reader. You probably have a copy of a book he loaned you. If you have his copy of American Caesar, he’d like it back.

He loved the following activities mightily: golf, quail and pheasant hunting, skiing, white water rafting, experiencing all types of outdoor adventures with his grandchildren and, of course, OU football.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Ernestine Cunningham, and his brother, Steven.

He is survived by his wife, Lu Cunningham of Edmond, OK; daughters Erin Sloan of Alexandria, VA (husband Garry Sloan), Megan Sanford of Edmond OK (husband Michael Sanford); grandson, William Garrison Sloan, granddaughters Emma Sloan and Meredith Sanford; one niece, Stevie Cunningham Bailey, one nephew, Derek William Cunningham; and a host of cousins and dear friends.

Funeral services will be Friday, Nov. 13th, 2 p.m. at First Christian Church, Edmond. Visitation will be Thursday, Nov. 12th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Smith and Kernke Funeral Home, 14624 N. May Ave, Oklahoma City.

Donations may be given to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, Center for Family Love in Okarche , The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation, and the Oklahoma Blood Institute.
